Interlaken and Aileen

Aileen and Jenny worked together in Interlaken.  This is from Aileen;

I'm sure I already told you about our accommodation in Interlaken, each with a tiny room in the house (old chalet!) of the formidable Frau Weissenberger.   She forbade us to use the bath, as the hot water supply had previously come through what used to be called a 'geyser' I think, and it had broken down!  I suppose there was some sort of shower  -  I don't remember clearly  -  I hope so, anyway, as we were there for 5 months !! One day, when Frau W.  was out, we dared to try to make the geyser work, as we thought maybe she was just being mean not wanting us to use too much precious hot water, and maybe the geyser worked all along.  Oh dear!  On ignition, it spat out black specks of soot all over the bath, but luckily didn't explode!   We did a pretty good job cleaning up, but I seem to remember that some time later she noticed some evidence, and, luckily, I can't remember whether we denied or confessed!!

The other thing there was how horrified Frau W. was at the way we hung out our washing on her roof terrace ( I can't remember how a chalet could have had a roof terrace?)  She wanted everything hung out in exact size and, I think, colour- co-ordinated order.  Otherwise, what would the neighbours think ?!!

We were both issued with bikes to visit all our clients in Interlaken and the surrounding villages, and they were also so useful to get us to the Strand on Lake Thun.  It was a pity that we didn't have meals together, and I was the luckier one to eat in one of the better hotels  - Beau-Site, while Jenny ate at Hotel Merkur, near the station, which was not so salubrious.  That doesn't seem fair now, but that's what we were instructed to do!  I think there were fondue evenings when we would have accompanied our clients and enjoyed that sort of meal together
